Books and Materials Needed - Studying and preparing for the Private Pilot written and practical test is a frustrating process without the proper tools and instructor guidance. Here is a list of books and materials that I feel are mandatory items for preparing for both the Written Knowledge Test and the Practical Flight Test. Pilot Training Links Balloon Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-11) - This handbook is published by the FAA and introduces the basic pilot knowledge and skills that are essential for piloting balloons. It introduces pilots to the broad spectrum of knowledge that will be needed as they progress in their pilot training. Available on line in PDF file format. Private Pilot Practical Test Standards Guide (PTS) - This is the guide the FAA examiner will use during your Private Pilot flight test. Commercial Pilot Practical Test Standards Guide (PTS) - This is the guide the FAA examiner will use during your Commercial flight test. Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR's) - On-Line listed by Parts. Parts 1, 61, 91 are the main regulations that apply to Private and Commercial Pilots. How Do I Become a Pilot: Study Materials and Tips by the FAA Flights Standard Service. An excellent site for study information put out by the FAA. CATS Written Testing Centers - Locations where you can take FAA Written Knowledge Test Exams. You will need your instructors recommendation to take the exam. FAA Airmen Certificate Application Form - This the the form you use to apply for your Pilot Certificate and flight test after you have completed all requirements and have been recommended for the test by a Commercial Pilot/Flight Instructor. How to Obtain a Good Weather Briefing - FAA-P-8740-30 - See FAA documents web site. (Link coming soon) DUAT - On-line weather and preflight briefing service for pilots and student pilots only. You must have a pilot certificate number or Student pilot certificate number to access this service. (Link coming soon)
